I have finally dared to write my first blog. Even though I had lot of things in mind to share with the people I know but due to the fact that my English being poor and not so impressive to readers. But I told myself, let whatever be the comments, critics I will write and publish this blog without any hesitation. So I requests you all give me valuable feedback in terms of comments to improve further....

I was listening to one of the Kannada entertainment programme about Knowledge Vs Common sense. It was nicely narrated by presenter. The story goes like....There was person called 'Gundu'. He was considered as useless in class room among all other students. His thinking process was entirely different from others. One fine day teacher gives problem to solve every one. The problem goes like ---The cost of one goat is Rs10. Then calculate how much of 100 goats will cost?. Every body in the class solved the problem correctly except 'Gundu'. The teacher cursed 'Gundu' and told him to stand on the bench. The bold 'Gundu' stood on the bench. The teacher asked him....Why you have not solved such simple problem?. Then 'Gundu' kept quite. The teacher got angry asked him repeatedly. The 'Gundu' said, Sir the problem itself is wrong. Then teacher was surprised and angered at him as usually happens.

Then teacher asked at 'Gundu' , what's wrong with problem?. After repeatedly asking 'Gundu' replied the..Sir,the cost of mutton in market is Rs 250. How come the gaot will cost only Rs10?. This is how 'Gundu' was different from others. The teacher spent time in libraray but 'Gundu' spent time in market. Teacher got only 'Knowledge' but 'Gundu' got 'Common sense'.

Software testing offers big ROI

NEW YORK -- Software testing is an expense that ultimately saves an organization a great deal of money. It has a quantifiable return on investment (ROI) and testers can follow a simple series of steps to calculate it, explained Rex Black during a session at the recent FutureTest 2008 conference.

Black, president and principal consultant of RBCS, emphasized the cost-effectiveness of creating quality software. "The money you spend to build it right the first time is always less than the money it costs to fix it," he said. The amount of money saved can be two times, four times or even 32 times the cost of investment, he continued.

Testers concerned about their budgets can cite a wealth of well-established references to justify upfront costs to management, Black said. He listed four ways testing saves money: Finding bugs that get fixed, finding bugs that don't get fixed, running tests that mitigate risks and guiding the project to success through timely, accurate, credible information for project tracking.

The ROI for finding and fixing bugs
When figuring the ROI for finding bugs that are fixed, Black instructed his audience to measure the cost of quality. The cost of quality combines the costs of conformance and nonconformance, he said. Conformance costs are those accrued when an organization creates and tests quality software and can be broken down into prevention and protection costs.

The cost of nonconformance consists of the cost of internal failure before release and external failure after, including the expense of finding and correcting bugs in released software, handling phone calls from angry customers, and losing business due to a damaged reputation.

Black set up equations for a series of hypothetical case studies. He estimated 1,000 "must-fix" bugs occur in a quarterly release. Bugs cost $1 when found during review, $10 when found through developer testing, $100 when found through tester testing, and $1,000 when found by customers.

If an organization conducted no formal testing, developers might find 250 bugs and customers 750, Black hypothesized. Using his figures, the software vendor spends $2,500 for the bugs found by developers and $750,000 for those found by customers for a total of $752,500 for the cost of quality.

If the vendor hires an inferior testing group for $70,000 and that group finds 350 bugs through manual testing, the total cost of quality is greatly reduced, Black told the audience. After paying for the testers, the vendor spends $2,500 for the bugs found by developers, $35,000 for the bugs found by testers and $400,000 for the bugs found by customers. The cost of quality in this case is $507,500, Black found.

In another hypothetical case, Black armed the testing team with automated tools costing $150,000 ($12,500 a quarter for 12 quarters). The testers find 500 bugs and the cost of quality is reduced to $385,000, he calculated. Costs can be cut further if bugs are found earlier, added Black. "Suppose the test manager realizes it's cheaper to find bugs in requirement and design reviews," he said. If the testers manage to find 150 bugs this way at a price tag of $1, the cost of quality drops to $235,150.

For these hypothetic cases, Black deliberately picked an unexceptional testing team. "A good team should find 85% or more of defects," he said. "A mediocre job still saves the company a lot of money."

The value of finding bugs that aren't fixed
"The rule of testing is 'find the scary stuff first,'" Black said. Once the "scary stuff" has been fixed, there may be many bugs remaining. However, knowing about these bugs and preparing for them can generate value, he explained. An organization can decide to turn off the feature that contains the bug, warn users of the bug in release notes, or provide technical support staff with a workaround. The workaround provides value by shortening calls to tech support.

Black set up another equation to demonstrate his point. In this case, each software bug initiates five calls, a call for a known bug is 15 minutes shorter than the call for an unknown bug, and each member of technical support is paid $40 an hour. There are 60 minutes in an hour, so put 15 over 60, multiply the fraction by five and by 40. The result is $50 saved.

Convincing management
"The value of information is found in enlightening management and executives," Black said. "We don't do a good job of this." He encouraged the audience to perform their own calculations.

"What gets measured gets done, what gets valued gets funded," said Black. "What we do as testers has value and we can quantify that value."

To help IT professionals become more aware of potential career blunders, Computerworld spoke with John M. McKee, president of BusinessSuccessCoac h.net, a Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based career coaching and consulting firm. McKee is the author of author of Career Wisdom: 101 Proven Strategies to Ensure Workplace Success. Here are 10 career-killers, with McKee's advice about how to recognize and avoid them.

1. Failing to have a life plan. "This is the No. 1 biggest mistake that I run into with my clients. I work with a number of clients in IT, many of whom are in C-level roles. A life plan is a business plan, in the same way that a company leader creates an annual business plan for what the future is going to bring from a corporate perspective. Three life aspects to focus on include one's career, personal and family, and financial goals. If someone has a good title and a satisfactory personal and family life but they're struggling to make monthly payments, then they're not going to be satisfied. They should look at those aspects for themselves. They should look at the competitive environment, the job marketplace and whether their skill set is current. If someone can replace them because they're cheaper, faster or better, it's no different than looking at your IT requirements. Most importantly, this plan should be written down. Only 14% of people do that. 86% are putting their futures in the hands of others. It's not a good place to be in."

2. Not keeping your skills current. "The business landscape is ever-changing and there is more demand for jobs than supply. Not staying on par with colleagues and those vying for your job will be a death knell. With individuals able to do the same work that someone is doing anywhere in the world today and the prospect that organizations will chase skill sets around the world, if you're not up to date with your skill sets in IT, you're significantly at risk of being replaced. This includes the need to stay up to date in technical skills, business skills and soft skills."

3. Failing to deliver results. "Winners in business know that it's all about accountability. Those who harbor a sense of entitlement for simply having put forth effort, irrespective of the results of those efforts, are guaranteed to fall by the wayside. It's very easy in a corporation to believe that becoming more efficient will translate into becoming more effective. So becoming preoccupied with creating greater efficiency may be a short-term solution to helping the bottom line, but it doesn't help the organization to grow. I rarely see people get the big bonuses in the organization simply because they understand the policies and procedures of the company. It has to do with delivering the goods. You have to know your customers, know what your marketplace wants. Great leadership is all about asking questions."

4. Confusing efficiency with effectiveness. "Those who think that communicating via e-mail replaces the need to actually talk with people around them fail to recognize the importance of personally connecting with others in today's highly automated and technological environment. Communicating in person whenever possible is imperative for success-seekers. "

5. Believing that you are irreplaceable. "There is no room for divas in the workplace. As soon as you convince yourself that you and only you can do the job 'right,' your star will surely start to fall. In any organization, any person can have a good couple of ideas, a good couple of years and a few successes under their belts and they start to think that the company can't do without them. They start to sit on their laurels and find themselves in greater jeopardy of losing their jobs. Comparing notes with others in the organization helps keep people grounded. It helps anyone in the organization to have different trusted advisers' perspective on what's going on and how their performance is being viewed."

6. Knowing all the answers. "This old adage remains true: Knowledge is power. Professing to know it all can readily stagnate a career. Winners remain unceasingly interested in learning new ideas and approaches. Asking a lot of questions is a hallmark of great leaders and great managers. When one stops asking questions and starts believing they've seen it all, they are devaluing the amount of change going on in the world today."

7. Surrounding yourself with "brown-nosers. " "Losers like having people tell them how smart they are, whether or not it's true, while successful managers and other professionals accept and encourage intelligence and creativity in others. If you're constantly being told by your peers that everything you're doing is wonderful, you need a better group of advisers. If your supervisor believes that you're doing a great job, that's terrific -- it's probably reflecting well on him or her."

8. Forgetting to give credit to others. "Losers inappropriately take full credit for positive events despite the help or input received by others, while winners give credit where credit is due. Losers inevitably reap what they sow. If your boss is a real pumpkinhead, you can probably get away with this a few times. But if you keep doing this, chances are your boss is going to catch on that you're a glory hog."

9. Failing to self-promote. "Bragging is one thing, but letting colleagues throughout your industry know of your success through case studies, promotion bulletins, or other such tools is quite another. Losers often fail to recognize the importance of letting others know about their successes, or go about it in entirely the wrong way. In today's disconnected business world, where many people work at a distance from their supervisors, it's important to let your boss and leadership know your contributions and that you are a valuable asset. This could be as simple as providing your supervisor with an e-mail once a week to inform him about what you're working on and your progress. By doing that, when decisions are made for promotions or job transfers, you're more likely to get what's due to you."

10. Losing perspective. "Intuitive businesspeople recognize that, despite their best attempts to do everything right, sometimes they approach roadblocks and seek the advice and perspective of a respected friend, colleague or even a business coach. Those who fail to recognize their shortcomings are destined for the unemployment line. It has everything to do with forgetting the reasons why their business exists, why they're in this business, and what it is they intended to accomplish when they entered this industry. You need to be excited about what it is you're doing, and you need to put more enthusiasm into what it is you're doing. If you're not looking forward to getting out of bed in the morning, you're working on a downward trend -- you just don't know it yet."

Something All Software Professionals should know

Six software professionals under the age of 33 have died and 2 top executives from renowned software companies have become paralysed because of stress-related heart ailments in the last six months in Chennai, says a study by Mitran Foundation, a Bangalore-based voluntary association of practising doctors.

"All the six who died, and the two who became invalid, had no family history of heart attacks or any pre-history of heart ailments or paralysis. They were all in their prime, between 27 and 33 years, and handled challenging projects at work in their respective companies. They worked long and continuous hours. The end struck them very suddenly, and it looked as if their hearts refused to take any more stress," said Dr Dwarakanath, director of Mitran Foundation, who has studied stress components in 40 software companies in Chennai during the last six months.

The study, conducted at a cost of Rs 45 lakhs, covered more than 4,000 software professionals from 80 companies who were in service for a minimum of three years. The email responses were scientifically tabulated and the findings were ready in 2002. Dr Dwarakanath, who was the late Dhirubhai Ambani's personal stress management consultant, said questionnaires extracting every minute detail were sent to the respondents. The personal background, family history and personal characteristics of these individuals were assessed and it was found that the stress in these professionals was only due to work pressure. All other factors were eliminated.

"Our study confirmed that the number of suicides, divorces, heart ailments, BP and diabetes patients and mental depression are the highest in the software industry. The fancy salaries of software professionals are no longer something to rejoice about," Dr Dwarakanath said.

"We found that the software industry has simply no routine. Deadlines hang before them and every day they chase new problems. During weekends more than 60 per cent of the vehicles are found parked in the office complexes. There is no physical exercise and new food habits favoured by pizza culture fuel the problem. Cervical spondilitis and wrist problems due to uncomfortable handling of the computer mouse, eye problems and discomfort in bowel movements are common.

The stress for couples where both are employed in the IT industry is the worst. The simple step of taking time off from work for three months allowed an IT couple wanting a child for years to conceive one," Dr Dwarakanath said.

M.T.R. Venukopalan, senior training coordinator, Covansys India, acknowledged that IT professionals were the most stressed individuals. "Even if the company sponsors a movie or self-care lecture, not many attend them," he said. Jyothsana, a travel coordinator for Temenos India Pvt Ltd, expressed concern for the young employees who complain of back and knee pains. She acknowledged that IT professionals require a specific eating and physical exercise routine to ease their stress. "Our lives are becoming mechanical, guided only by deadlines," she said.

So think again if you are staying late in the office regularly. Think again about your family. Think again about your social life and health.

If you are supporting multiple networks on geographically dispersed sites, then it’s pretty much essential to have some type of quick reference in place to display the basic status of network connectivity between each one. This becomes even more important when those sites are distributed globally — as the potential for disruption due to unforeseen circumstances is greatly increased.

At the beginning of this year, I ran into problems when an earthquake in Taiwan disturbed undersea transport cables. This bizarrely threw our Korean office into a total Internet blackout (and Korea is quite a way from Taiwan), which later proved to be due to packet loss caused by the rerouting of traffic in an attempt to work around the broken channels. Hong Kong experienced intermittent losses of connectivity for the same reasons. This is obviously something that can’t be avoided, but with a simple and straightforward platform to display statistics on your interoffice connectivity, it’s much easier to get a high-level view of network status.

In situations in which network response becomes erratic, being able to view a historical chart of TTL and packet loss statistics can be a great aid in understanding how changes in routing paths outside of your networks have affected your WAN links and, therefore, the services that run across them.

SmokePing is a simple Web-based package that produces easy to read graphical representations of network latency and link quality. By recording TTL and packet loss statistics for multiple network links, it allows administrators to go back and see when an issue started to show itself, whether or not it’s specific to one site or region and it also helps to show any patterns which may be developing. Diagnosis is the first step towards cure!
Prerequisites for Smoke Ping
In order to install Smokeping, there are a few prerequisites that must be met. The following must be installed:

Apache (1 or 2)
Perl
RRDtool
SpeedyCGI
FPing

If you’re using Debian, Ubuntu, or Red Hat then you can install these via apt-get or yum. If you prefer, you can compile and install each of them manually, which is what I’m going to do here. I’ll skip the Apache install as I already have Apache (2) installed and running on this particular server.

Install RRDtool

Download the latest stable release of RRDtool. Unpack it to your build directory and take a look at doc/rrdbuild.txt for full installation instructions; I decided to install in /usr. During the configuration step, I found that I needed to install two libraries with apt-get in order for RRDtool to compile:

# apt-get install cgilib libart-2.0-dev# mkdir /usr/share/rrdtool# ./configure --prefix=/usrAfter a successful configuration (no errors), build and install with:

# make && make installCheck for a successful installation:

Moving on, we now need to install SpeedyCGI and afterwards configure Apache to load it. This is actually pretty simple if all of the installation scripts work properly. I’m using Apache 2 and I needed to install the apache2-threaded-dev package with apt-get before continuing:

# apt-get install apache2-threaded-devUnpack the SpeedyCGI archive in your build directory and then change to that directory. Now start the configuration with:

# perl Makefile.PLYou will be asked whether or not to build the Apache mod_speedycgi module; I said no, as I have had problems with this and Apache 2.

Once that’s done, continue with the compiling and installation:

# make# make test# make installNow to build the mod_speedycgi module, navigate to the mod_speedycgi2 directory. Before kicking off the script, create a sym-link called apxs:

# ln -s /usr/bin/apxs2 /usr/bin/apxsI found this was necessary due to running Apache 2; if using Apache 1, the file is called apxs anyway. Now execute the Makefile:

# perl Makefile.PLThat should finish without any errors; continue by compiling and installing the module.

# make && make installI didn’t have any trouble building this on my system. I checked the /etc/apache2/httpd.conf:

LoadModule speedycgi_module modules/mod_speedycgi.soAnd found that it had correctly inserted. The module mod_speedycgi.so had also been copied to the correct location. If you come across any errors at this point, I would suggest searching through the SpeedyCGI mailing list as it’s more than likely others have seen the same error before.

To complete the installation, restart Apache and check the logs for any errors related to the mod_speedycgi module.

Install FPing
The last tool to install is FPing. FPing is very similar to the standard ping command, but it extends the feature set making it much easier to ping multiple hosts from one command. Unfortunately the FPing Web site and SourceForge project seem to be very poorly maintained. I would recommend installing via apt-get if you can otherwise get the source from the Debian packages repository (right hand bar). No configuration should be required so it will be simple:

Just because the flood of social networking web 2.0 websites and hitting the internet world with a flow and lack of understanding and alertness from the general internet users may lead to a disaster or gimic profiles or even misuse of accounts to an extent that you might get banned as some recent internet users were. Please make sure that before you accept invitations and send invitations you do some basic checks...

1. Check over Google, Yahoo and MSN about the search and page rankings of such sites.
2. Do a blog search and read feedbacks about the networking product you are to subscribe.
3. Please never plug in your yahoo, gmail and other details to send invitition to your friends list... no matter how close you are to the website or your friends you want to invite
4. Use the website on your own before you bother Me or anyone else.
5. Never use your Yahoo/Gmail/or any other accounts with the same passwords or user ids.
6. Avoid clicking on links that says "You can Talk Frre to Me on XXXX - Blah Blah" .... btw this was just an example fo some invitations I recently saw.
7. If there are no Image Checks on regsitration it means that the websites are not secure enough and prone to spams... avoid registering...

Employees today are asking for a workplace that helps them balance the demands of their work and family lives, rather than forcing them to choose one over the other. Organisations have also accepted that among the many other aspirations of employees, the most important is one that seeks to be able to ‘provide well’ for their families. Amongst the many schemes that organisations have introduced for their employees, having special schemes for their children is the latest addition. A Technical Interview I took yesterday! (real one)

Yesterday I got a CV from my HR. The profile is of a seven year old Java Technical Lead looking out for a change and currently in working for a company in Pondichery. I took some extra preparation for taking this interview to make sure that I will not run out of questions, as the guy is very experienced. This was the first round of interview arranged for him by my company and if sounds OK he has to come over to Trivandrum to attend the next round.

Here are some of the excerpts of it.

Me: You are now working in your hometown and why you want to come all the way to Trivandrum.
Candidate: Actually you know, I can work anywhere in the world.
Me: good.. That is the spirit. Tel me about your recent project
Candidate: doing a forex application.. bla bla bla...

Me: what you do other than coding? You are a technical Lead no?

Came across a nice article, could not resist forwarding it to all of you.

A few months ago, TreeHugger Mark Ontkush wrote a post on his blog EcoIron titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year .. The post lays out the following train of thought. "An all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts." Google, which has a white background and gets about " 200 million queries a day " could reduce global energy use by 750 Megawatt-hours a year by simply changing the color of its homepage to black. (For more detailed calculations and assumptions check out the original post here ..)

In response to this post a black version of Google emerged called Blackle.com .. According to Blackle's homepage at publication time, 4,408.917 Watt hours have been saved by. The site encourages users to "make a difference today [by] ... Blackling "energy saving tips" or visit[ing] treehugger.com a great blog dedicated to environmental awareness." Nice ideas. Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is the best way to understand the detailed work of the project when you have to build a schedule from scratch. It's used to break the project down into the major phases, deliverables, and work components that will be built by the project.

These work components can then be broken down into the activities that are required to build them. The WBS is not the same as the final schedule (which requires sequencing, resources, estimated effort, estimated duration, etc.)

The following five things should be considered when building your work breakdown structure.

Create a WBS dictionary for large projects *(
Normally you wouldn't need a WBS dictionary, but if your WBS has hundreds (or thousands) of detailed activities, there may just be too much to keep track of by hand. In this case, it might make sense to place all of the important information in a WBS dictionary. The dictionary helps keep track of all of the summary and detailed activities, including a short description, the WBS numeric identifier (1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, etc.) and the estimated effort. If you enter your WBS dictionary into a specialized tool, the tool can also help to keep track of changes to the WBS as well.

Use the summary activities as milestones

Your WBS should contain both detail and summary activities. (A summary activity is one that is broken down further. A detailed activity is one that is not broken down further.) Although a schedule usually includes only detailed activities, it makes sense to include the summary activities as milestones (markers signifying that a deliverable or set of deliverables is complete). A summary activity can be used as a milestone since it would indicate that all of the underlying detailed work has been completed.

Break activities into two or more detailed activities.

I've seen teams that break one activity in the WBS into only one activity at the next level. In my opinion, this doesn't make sense because then the detailed activity represents the same work as the prior summary activity. This doesn't buy you anything.

Make the final detailed activities action oriented

The detailed activities on your WBS (the ones that are not broken down further) are ultimately moved to your schedule. For that reason, it's easier if the detailed activities in your WBS are action oriented – just as activities in your schedule would be. For example instead of describing a detailed WBS activity as ""meeting," you should state it as "schedule a weekly meeting." Instead of having a WBS detailed activity for "Testing Plan," you should state it instead as "Create Testing Plan." In this way, the detailed activities can be moved to the schedule with a minimum of wording changes.

Don't place requirements on the WBS

If you place a deliverable on your WBS, you can break this deliverable down into the activities that are required to create it. You don't break a deliverable down into the requirements that describe it. Requirements do not belong on a WBS. Only deliverables and activities belong on the WBS.

Using these techniques will save you time and rework on your next WBS

OK so lot of scratching heads and when it is done I hear this annoying noise.... krrrrr, krrrrrrr, krrrrrrrr ... just kidding... so all who have this issue of dandruff's No Pantene's or All clear's really help... there is some home made remedy I found working in the Dr. Mom's column...

BTW all of this is coming because the blog is dying .... grrrrr dead already..

home remedy dandruff cure
aloe vera dandruff cure - with aloe vera gel . About 10-15 minutes before you wash your hair, rub a lot of aloe vera gel into your scalp. leave it on for 10 minutes, and shampoo your hair like you regulary do. if you do this everyday the dandruff will stay away.

Using lime juice to wash hair.

Soak 2 tablespoons fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning grind into a fine paste. Apply all over scalp and leave for ½ an hour. Wash with mild shampoo.

Ingredients: Olive oil and almond oil
Instructions: Mix the olive oil with the almond oil. Leave it on about 5 min.s after it starts to burn. Rinse well to clear dandruff.

Massage your hair with warm coconut oil and apply the juice of 2 lemons, steam your hair and leave the oil on for about 2 hours. Shampoo with a mild shampoo. Repeat 2-3 times a week.

Boil a handful of neem leaves in 4 teacups of water. After cooling and filtering, use for rinsing hair.

Jumping Back in a Long Document

If you are editing a long document and you need to temporarily refer another place in the document, you can use this tip to make yourself more productive. There are two ways you can jump back and forth in your document.

First, you can use the scroll bars to view the other parts of the document. The insertion point is still at your old editing position, even though it is off-screen. When you are through viewing the part of the document you needed to refer to, press one of the arrow keys or any printable character (including the Space Bar). You will be taken back to the exact place you were editing. Of course, if you pressed a printable character you will need to delete it.

The other method is to use Shift+F5. This key combination is used to jump to the last three places in the document where you made edits. (Actually, it is four locations if you count the one where you first pressed Shift+F5.) You can press it once and you will return to where you were most recently editing.

Monday Morning.... Yuck?????

I recently landed up on this community on Orkut "Monday Sucks" and it was fortunate that there was no surprise… the community is full of Monday Haters… darn… Students, managers, Developers, Executives and a whole bunch of people saying why they hate Mondays…

Well it doesn't really take a community to tell you how much you hate Monday as you see lot of calls being made everyday when it comes to a discussion on a Monday … I don't know all or most reasons exactly why people hate, but I surely got a few things worth mentioning that can make your colleague not hate Monday:

Let your Week not begin with Monday: That is one reason our Sprint starts on Friday…I understand the most boring phase of a WORK LIFECYCLE is the beginning phase (Doesn't apply to you if you are a PP), and that's what every one of us think, Monday is the kickoff of work…

Avoid Meetings on Monday: Most of the Update Meetings happen on Monday, the first fear that comes to an employees mind is … "Damn… I got to update my Boss... and Hell I am not prepared…!" Or "Wish there was no party on the Friday night I would have finished some of my work on the weekend", actually lot more. No Meetings and Updates on Monday morning help release some pressure from the employees ;)

The Beginning of the Day should be 1 in the noon? I will get some stares from Kari (My Boss: D) for this… but I believe lot of guys are up until late even on Sunday nights… Be it a Family Function or a Dinner, or some auspicious occasion or a Bday party… starting late will kick off the thoughts of "Mom don't wake me up this early"

Light as a Feather, Smooth as Sush's cheeks: Mondays should be shorter and sweeter and the day should really begin with some sweet faces around…. It sounded funny to Mark (My previous employer) when I asked him to keep Interviews for BPO section on the Monday afternoon hours…

Well this is not all lot more you can do to get your Monday work as a Saturday… Just that you need to get out of the High School ;)

Eclipse has the ability to display values in the Debugger's perspective Variables' view, and normally you see whatever the object's toString() method gives you. Most of the time, that's enough, but sometimes you either end up with something that's not displaying the information you want, or even has any kind of toString() at all ...

In the above example, when run it will print out [DocumentDetail(10000, "Doc Ref","Doc title"));] but if you put a breakpoint at the print line, the variables display will show something like DocumentDetail@a56bf02 . Of course, given that we have the source code available, we could modify the code -- but there's an even easier way.

In the Preferences -> Java -> Debug -> Detail Formatter pane, you can define code to be executed in place of the default toString() method. Simply add a new formatter; then choose the type (in this case, Person) and add the formatter code that will run. It can access the private members as well as invoke methods; in this case, the detail formatter is executing id+ " " + reference +" " + title to print a more readable name.

Now, if you look in the debugger, you'll see that the code is being used to render the Person variable, without even having to restart Eclipse. You can change the content, and either enable or disable the formatters on a type-by-type basis.

Of course, you have to be careful not to end up in recursive debugging loops; but the fact that you can decorate the code with whatever you want (including the original toString() if you so choose) means that it's no longer necessary to have to drill down into the objects variables to find exact values.

Liberalizations started in 1991. It was huge impact on Indian industry. Many small scale industries were shutdown. Major players tried to be there in the market. There were no jobs in traditional market. Everybody scolded the government. Everybody thought we would import everything from other countries and our industry would go to dust.

One important aspect was missed from liberalization was that we could improve our industry self-realization and become global player in competitive market. Till then there were only a few companies had R&D departments. After this every company realised to be independent to survive in the market and started to improve themselves in productivity through R&D on various areas. That gave the strength to Indian industry to play global role. Now a days there are many Indian companies acquiring foreign companies and showing their leadership in those market segments. This is a great thing for Indian Inc and economy.

Recently, Tata Steel went into a deal with a European steel company, Corus. But before the deal was closed another company CSN bid the same company for high. There was row on this for a while. Ultimately, Corus went for auction. In that auction Tata Steel came up as winner. That is the great achievement of Indian industry.

Likewise, across industries there were many acquisitions from Indian industry. We become global players. Now the globe is a play area for our Indian economy and industry.

Bangalore, India.

A 4 year old girl was admitted due to leg fracture. As it was anopen fracture, she had to undergo an operation to stitch the protrudingbone back in place. Though it was quite a minor operation, she washooked on to life support system, as a part of the process. The doctors hadto input some data prior to the operation to suit different conditions.Thereafter, the operation proceeded. Half way through the process, thelife support system suddenly went dead.

The culprit: - Some one was using his/her hand-phone outside theoperation theatre. And the frequency had affected the system. They tried totrack the fellow but to no avail. The little girl, young and innocent asshe was, died soon after.

"Be compassionate! Do not use your hand phone /mobiles especially atany hospitals or within the Aircraft or any places where you are told notto use it... You might not be caught in the act, but you might havekilled someone without knowing". Sometimes it's a matter of Life &Death....!!!!

Please pass this to as many, since most of us are just not aware of the seriousness of this issue.

So that we just need to pluck it based on the availability and our need. Friends, think about it. Our elders said that Money doesn't grow on trees to spend on our wants. Let's try to create a big tree with a proper seed and nurturing it continuously. So that we don't need to tell our descendents that money doesn't grow on trees. we could say them I have planted a great seed and nurtured that to become a big enough tree for you. It is now your turn to nurture and keep it growing further and pluck only neccessary money and hand it over to your descendents. This became true with many people. Look at the Indian context, we have a handfull of examples for this approach starting from Tatas, Birlas, Amabanies, Mittals, and many others.

Does everyone agree for this? Of-course I agree in all my senses.It is applicable to all things that you do from getting off the bed to till you go to bed. The first beauty that one holds is bed, so no one wants to get up easily from bed and always want to be in the bed. The next beauty is that holding a tea cup and glancing through the news paper till one find the beauty. There it stuck one eyes and no more further movements till one savour the reading. The next comes the breathe holding beauty of getting ready in front of the mirror. Everyone holds and sees one's own beauty in mirror. Then the beauty of first feast of the day. There after every one holds real beauty in their minds by looking at the code which is written and application's look and feel which is developed and tested. What's next to Agile?

To everyone else who was not a part of Ruby on Rails session that Tom Ward (X BOL employee) took for us a few months ago and for the information of the Tech savy's who are always looking for the new world of technologies that is hitting the industry... I read something very interesting about Ruby on Rails ... and that is "Ruby/Rails" is the Next thing to happen after Agile.... Yes.. it sounds weird and different but that is the truth .. specially considering the amount of adaptability several organisations have given for Agile.

The answer is with them who had got to listen the whole session on the speaker phone of my cell phone ... vulnerable but true.. For those who are still not understanding WHY it is so ????

So Ruby gives a real Agile touch to the Architecture where you dont have to bother about the configs and re-usability and specially nothing at the level of what and how on inheritence and persistence... slowly but steadily as Ruby comes up more openly we will be able to get the answer... and to the Traditional Architects and other Techies the answer for time being is Agile also had to face lot of criticism when people had to go away from the Traditonal methodologies....

To the limited knowledge I could acquire so far on Ruby/Rails I could derive one thing very very clearly .... that a RAD tool that leaves you with a Architecture and a Language that is agile which also takes care of testing while developing and for sure no Wizz cards of re-engineering and re-factoring post production. And not sure if anyone remembers the Macros that can be created for testing right way when you are developing leaves us with a Product with every Unit Tested and Automated for testing, with a decent Architecture with no haywire hic-ups and with support to all functional and Business languages...

If anyone knows anyone using Ruby/Rails it would be good to have another session;)

Recently in The Times of India there was an article / advertisement aboutPizza delivery Companies which guarantees you free pizza if they fail todeliver within the specified time (like 30 minutes). Have you ever wonderedwho pays for the free pizzas??

Well, the delivery boy is made to pay for the pizza. They are paid such lowwages and the price of the pizza is deducted from their monthly wages whichcan amount to upto 60% in some months (It becomes difficult to run theirfamily). To deliver the pizzas the delivery boys take high traffic risks asdelivery becomes their priority. Their life and safety risks are neitherlooked into by the Pizza Shop Management nor the Pizza Delivery Boyhimself. (They are more concerned to avoid the deduction from theirsalary).

If this type of exploitation is carried on in your city's pizza logisticswe should stop availing the home delivery system, because to deliver ourpizza one person may be risking his life. Is the life of an Indian citizenso cheap and of no value? In case he is late in delivering the pizza, weare enjoying the free pizza at the hard earned money of a poor deliveryboy. Is it fair or right on our part to do it?As a human, please think and if you feel that this is wrong, please spreadthe message and stop having the so called FREE pizzas delivered at home.

Vikram was at school this morning in the outskirts and the teacher asked all the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came out, Fireman, Policeman, Salesman, Businessman, Captain of Industry etc, but Vikram was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked him about his father.
"My father is an exotic dancer in a gay club and he dances in front of other men. Sometimes if the offer is really good, he proceeds with them ."

The teacher quickly set the other children some work and took little Vikram aside to ask him if that was really true.
"No" said Vikram , "He plays cricket for India but I was just too embarrassed to say."

Be Aware of the Javadoc Browsing Options.

Javadoc is a key component to understanding the breadth and depth of an API you are trying to work with in Java. Most successful APIs and frameworks in Java, whether commercial, open source, or even specification-based are usually accompanied by a clear and concise set of Javadocs that explain clearly how to use them.

Inline (Pop-up) Assistance
The most commonly useful counterpart is the default hover in your Java source files. By just retaining focus on a method, field, or type reference (or declaration for that matter) in the editor or in a Java-centric view, you will get a pop-up after a short delay that gives you the Javadoc of that element.

If you press F2, you will gain focus on this little pop-up dialog, and you can browse it in more detail with full HTML features (such as bulleted lists

Eclipse 3.2 milestone 4 is supposed to include a new facility that will parse an HTML Javadoc source (such as http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/). This worked perfectly for me with a local set of Javadoc folders, but I had no luck getting it to work over the wire (e.g. to a http:// style URL).

You can set up the Javadoc location of a library by right clicking on the library, and going to Properties... . Then, you go to the Javadoc Location section, and setting up your association accordingly.

The Javadoc View
Eclipse comes with a Javadoc view (circa 1924... or there-abouts) that can keep up with you as you edit and browse Java source code. The Javadoc view works very similarly to the Javadoc hover (and gets its information from the same place, meaning it's bound by the same 3.2 Milestone 4 restrictions listed above).

External Javadoc
Finally, You can always see the Javadoc via your favorite (read 'default') browser by just using the keystroke Shift+F2 - which, by default, is the command 'Open External Javadoc'. Whatever you have selected in the editor (method, class, etc.), will then gain focus in an external browser.

oxymoron.- A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined, as in a deafening silence and a mournful optimist.

I came across with this word when I was looking for how to generate random numbers in Oracle.

And then I went through a page of a forum, where someone wanted to create a random number and that should be unique throughout the table's column.

Expert said "Randomly generate and unique is sort of an oxymoron. What I've done in the past is to combine 3 or so numbers together to achieve this."
